Street to School

Aviva 'Street to School' programme is about recognising the unrecognised and helping young people who have fallen out of education or are denied access to education to rebuild their lives maximising their natural potential.

Aviva's Street to School programmes around the world recognises that every child has the right to fulfill their potential. It's about giving them a chance for a better future.

Street to School' is a programme that is driven by our people and demonstrating our commitment to this cause, the Board of Directors of AVIVA NDB have committed the use of a minimum of 50% of our shareholder donation fund to further this initiative.

Our activities in 'Street to School' involve three main projects:

  1. 'Aviva Green Village' in Ihala Hewessa
  2. 'Aviva School Village' in Rathugala
  3. 'Aviva Children's Home - Sanhinda' in Homagama

'Aviva Green Village' in Ihala Hewessa

The work in Aviva Green Village commenced in 2009 with the company donating solar panels to identified families and school supplies to the children. To date our people are sponsoring 27 children in the Aviva Green Village school.

The Aviva Green Village school is a public school built in the 1930s and today has approximately 80 students belonging to farming families. These children support their families by helping their parents with the farming activities, but at the same time, yearn for an education.

In its endevour to support these children to unleash their full potential, the Company stepped forward to develop and refurbish the infrastructure of the school, which included constructing proper toilets for girls and boys separately, repairing the ceiling and roof of the school buildings, repairing and painting walls, construction of a stairway, repairing the gutters, drains, broken windows, doors, and shrine room. In addition, the Company donated shoes to all the children and a computer to the school.

'Aviva School Village' in Rathugala

Aviva School Village is located in a rural, remote village called 'Rathugala', about 300 miles away from Colombo. The village is occupied by an indigenous community. These are the descendents of early settlers of the country, living in extreme poverty where education to the children is the last of the priority list of the parents. Thus, most children drop out from school at primary itself to either join their parents in farming or hunting or get involved in pastimes like alcoholism and drug addiction which ultimately waste away their lives.

In early 2010, AVIVA NDB signed a Letter of Understanding with the Commissioner of Probation and Child Care Services for the development of the Aviva School village in Rathugala. In the first phase, the Company completed the development of a tube well; providing drinking water not only to the school children, but to the villagers as well, school play ground, and a shrine room. Employees of AVIVA NDB reached out to the children by donating more than 300 books, whilst the Company donated school supplies packs to all the school children and plants for the school. The Company also handed over a secondary education scholarship scheme and attendance recognition scheme to the School principal.

'Aviva Children's Home - Sanhinda' in Homagama

Within its Street to School Scope, AVIVA NDB has made a 2 year commitment to the Department of Probation and Child Care Services for Sanhinda, which has been adopted as 'Aviva Children's Home'.

During the first year the Company will provide:

  • Financial / faculty support to further education in key areas of learning curriculum
  • Financial support to develop infrastructure, library and computer centre at the Home
  • Financial / faculty support for counselling support to children who suffer from various forms of psychological trauma due to their experiences on the streets

More than 200 employees volunteered to donate their one day's salary to the Aviva Children's Home - Sanhinda project.

In Street to School, our endevours are focused on giving these identified children groups something they would never have - a childhood worth remembering and the hope for a bright future.

AVIVA NDB Holds Fun-Packed Evening at Children's Home

AVIVA NDB Insurance held an evening of entertainment for the children at Sanhinda Home in Homagama recently as a part of the Company's 'Street to School' Corporate Responsibility endeavour. Global Aviva conducts a CR programme titled 'Street to School' in the countries in which the group operates, to uplift the education and living standards of underprivileged children. Sanhinda Children's Home has 60 youngsters in the age group 6 to 16 years who have once been street children.

In a unique step to inculcate and extend the value of sharing, the children of employees at AVIVA NDB were invited to join hands with the children in the home and enjoy a fun-filled get-together. The children played games, watched a children's movie and all participants received exciting gifts. The highlight was the presence of two popular stars - Roshan Ranawana and 'Suranga Maama' - to entertain and give away the gifts.
